A Process for Making Nuclear Fusion Energy

A process is described for producing regular nuclear fusion at room temperature by compressing a deuteride mixed with catalytic material. The reaction is explosive beyond any possible chemical reaction for these materials. An attempt at explaining the nuclear processes in terms of soft X-ray emission has been made by deriving models of a deuteron and alpha-particle. Future development for commercial energy production is discussed.

The first VVER-1000 reactor at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in India under commissioning tests has been lying idle since 26 September 2014 due to problems of turbo-generator. Two years before its grid connection, the Russian-made turbine erected in 2008, was overhauled by a private contractor and this fact was kept as a guarded secret. In spite of the overhaul, KKNPP turbine failed within hours of grid connection and was responsible for five trips, which kept the reactor off-grid for 59 days. It could not be revived even after a two-month long maintenance during August- September 2014. Usually the first overhaul of a new turbine is done after completion of 5 to 10 years of work. The extreme damage of the turbine could have been due to the mal-functioning of vibration monitoring instrument made by a Russian company charged for selling counterfeit parts. Failure of instrumentation in other systems have the potential for catastrophic accidents. The Government of India has so far refused to investigate the charges of corruption and failure of the quality assurance system at KKNPP which have implictions for the safety of the reactor. Or is it that there no government at all in our country?

Kinetic Fast Ignition Fusion

This is the first fusion method provably viable at utility scale. Energy input is by charged pellets fired at ultraspeed from modified particle accelerators, a technique routinely used to test spacecraft meteor shields, and first proposed as a fusion driver 50 years ago. A key enabling technology, now available, is the ability to track and steer individual pellets in flight, permitting very precise delivery independent of distance from accelerator to target. A train of pellets fired at successively increasing speed catch up together over a long flightpath to arrive as a unit: an accelerator of modest power can deliver an intense input.
For an efficient fast ignition strategy, medium-speed pellets impact and heat a hohlraum, causing 3-D compression of a hemispherical fuel capsule within. Smaller faster pellets fired from a parallel accelerator converge into a dense bullet, which strikes the compressed fuel to ignite it.
Technical risk is negligible because:
- Fuel compression required is less than already achieved in NIF.
- Subsequent ignition is so rapid that there is no chance for instabilities to disrupt it by fuel redistribution or mixing.
- All materials and components required have been successfully manufactured.
The system can burn deuterium-tritium fuel closely and completely surrounded by lithium, for a closed fuel cycle with no radioactivity issues. Capital cost will be modest: it may even be possible to modify existing coal-fired plant for fusion.
Key features are claimed in patents currently in the national phase worldwide.

Graphical 3D Modeling and Analysis of Molecules and Nanostructures with the BSM-SG Atomic Models

Nanostructures exhibit physical properties not predictable by Quantum mechanics, which deals explicitly with energy levels. Trying to work with physical dimensions is a problem not solved from the time of adoption of the Rutherford-Bohr model of hydrogen. Quantum mechanics also does not predict the chemical bond direction, it cannot provide a classical explanation of the spin of leptons and hadrons, why some isotopes are stable and others not, why the neutron has a magnetic moment and the electron has anomalous one, what is the size of the Rydberg state of atoms and so on. Quantum mechanics is also incapable to explain the nuclear transmutations at low temperature or so called LENR processes. These and other problems lead to the conclusion that the Quantum mechanics is not a real physical but a mathematical model only. The reexamination of the scattering experiments also leads to this conclusion, since the spherical shape of the nucleus has been a priory used in the data interpretation. The physical models derived in the Basic Structure of Matter Supergravitation Unified Theory (BSM-SG) provide classical explanations of all these problems. The BSM-SG atomic models provided in the Atlas of Atomic Nuclear Structures are suitable for 3D graphical modeling and analysis of molecules and nanostructures at sub-nanometric scale.
