In Newton’s world view, the passage of time is an unquestionable fact. Einstein abandoned Newton’s concept of absolute time in his Special Theory of Relativity, which requires a shift in perspective regarding the passage of time. A model is presented here that provides a complete description within the framework of the Special Theory of Relativity. A contribution to this is a mathematical justification of why time can only progress in one direction. It is based on a comparison of trigonometric functions with their hyperbolic counterparts. The assumption that the possibility of representing time in the form of a block universe proves a predetermined future is refuted, and the evolution of the block universe is described. With this description, the problem of the physical indescribability of the ‘now’ no longer arises.
