Spatiotemporal Pattern Generation using Frequency Dependent Chaos (Towards Tunable Evolution and Emergence)

Authors: Sai Venkatesh Balasubramanian

A novel kind of chaos dependent on frequency and offering the twin advantages of easy tunability and simplicity of implementation is proposed, using which, a simple methodology to generate a chaotic signal is designed and implemented in hardware using FPGA, and the generated chaos is characterized using standard parameters such as Lyapunov Exponents and Kolmogorov Entropy. This temporal signal is used as the basis acting on a spatial propagation rule to generate spatiotemporal patterns. The generated patterns and their dependence on the spatial and temporal rules are studied. The distinguishing features of the obtained spatiotemporal patterns are simplicity of implementation, richness of features observed and a temporal rather than a spatial basis for generation, leading to implementation without employing memory consuming neighbourhood rules, which form the highlights of the present work. The generation of spatiotemporal patterns is seen as a road to tunable evolution and emergence, and finds immense applications such as bar code and random number generators.

Integrative Medicine System Based On Music

Authors: Sai Venkatesh Balasubramanian

The lifestyle of today’s world demands a reliable, comprehensive integrative medicine system with minimal side effects. One of the most prominent candidates is music, an enjoyable healthcare approach. The present article formulates a music based integrative medicine system. Specifically, the physician-patient interaction is explored. Based on this model, Ayurveda and modern science such as Quantum Consciousness, Chaos Theory, Statistical Theory of Communication, Information Theory and Neurodynamics, six dimensions are formulated. These are physiological (TriDoshas), emotional (TriGunas), Sociological (Temperament), Psychological (Brain Waves), Spiritual (Chakras) and Informational (Landscape). The connection between music and each of these dimensions are explored. The formulation created in this article thus opens the doors for reliable, enjoyable, holistic healthcare with minimal side effects using music.

An Ode to Music: Chaos Theory, Meridians and Melakarthas

Authors: Sai Venkatesh Balasubramanian

It is well known that the variations in frequencies (Swaras) and timbre (tone) form melody (Raga), the key aspect leading to all kinds of music experience. The pinnacle of exploring the frequencies within an octave is the Melakartha system of Carnatic Music, forming the motivation of the present work. A time domain waveform of the Swara is used to form an iterative map explaining the evolution and behavior of the Raga, and thus music experience. The presence of sensitivity, or chaotic behavior is seen and studied using phase portraits, maximal Lyapunov Exponents and Distance Plots. Following this, the basics of Meridian based healing in Traditional Chinese Medicine are explored, and by formulating a procedure to compute the “Deviance” of a Raga, the 72 Melakartha Ragas are mapped to the 72 Meridians in the Human Body. It is opined that this article takes the first step towards a series of research developments culminating in an era of “Holistic Healthcare and Personal/Personnel Management using Music”.

Identification of Low Dimensional Chaos in Epileptogenic Seizure and Non-Seizure EEG using Solitary Wavelet Analysis

Authors: Sai Venkatesh Balasubramanian

The present work purports to the spectral and nonlinear analysis of intracranially recorded Electroencephalogram (EEG) time series data resulting in the identification and characterization of a low-dimensional chaos therein. Specifically, three categories of EEG time series data are considered: those recorded in non-epileptogenic regions during normal activity (‘healthy’ EEG), those recorded in epileptogenic regions during seizure activity (‘Seizure’ EEG), and those recorded in epileptogenic regions during normal non-seizure activity. In order to perform the spectral analysis efficiently, a new kind of wavelet, the solitary wavelet is proposed based on the hyperbolic secant function, where it is seen that this wavelet possesses vanishing higher moments with a negative logarithmic slope, thus translating to efficient detection of burst type signals without multiple levels of decomposition and reconstruction. The spectral analyses of the three categories of EEG data performed using Fourier and Wavelet analyses reveal that seizure EEG spectra, to a greater extent, and non-seizure epileptogenic EEG spectra, to a lesser extent, display prominent high frequency peaks, suggestive of resonant behavior. Nonlinear analysis using phase portraits too confirm the resonance oriented periodic orbits seen in Seizure EEG. Finally, quantitative analysis performed using Largest Lyapunov Exponents (LLE) and Fractal Dimension (D) reveal that both D and LLE values for seizure EEG are much lower than the healthy counterparts, with non-seizure epileptogenic EEG D and LLE values seen somewhere in between. The essence of these results is the observation of a distinct, uniquely identifiable low-dimensional chaotic behavior in EEG taken from epileptogenic region during non-seizure activities. This information can be used both as a preventive epilepsy diagnostic technique, as well as a post-surgical recovery assessment tool, and this forms the novelty of the present work.
