When traversing a solid material such as glass, a light wave can deposit part of its energy in a mechanical wave, leading to a color change of the light.  Laser-scanning microscopes can be miniaturized to image microenvironments in vivo via inclusion inside optical micromechanical system (MEMS) devices to replace the existing larger components.  A team led by University of Utah physicists has discovered how to fix a major problem that occurs in lasers made from a new type of material called quantum dots.
