Graphene Flagship researches from CNR-Istituto Nanoscienze, Italy and the University of Cambridge, UK have shown that it is possible to create a terahertz saturable absorber using graphene produced by liquid phase exfoliation and deposited by transfer coating and ink jet printing.  By finely tuning the distance between nanoparticles in a single layer, researchers have made a filter that can change between a mirror and a window.  Scientists from the University of Basel's Department of Physics and the Swiss Nanoscience Institute have succeeded in dramatically improving the quality of individual photons generated by a quantum system.  Physicists from the University of Basel have developed a memory that can store photons.  Scientists at the University of Sydney are entering a new phase of development to scale up the next generation of quantum-engineered devices.  Engineers at Australia's University of New South Wales have invented a radical new architecture for quantum computing, based on novel 'flip-flop qubits', that promises to make the large-scale manufacture of quantum chips dramatically cheaper-and easier-than thought possible.  A team of researchers from the U.S. and Italy has built a quantum memory device that is approximately 1000 times smaller than similar devices— small enough to install on a chip.  The cutting edge of data storage research is working at the level of individual atoms and molecules, representing the ultimate limit of technological miniaturisation.  This is an important clue for our theoretical understanding of optically controlled magnetic data storage media.  A crystalline material that changes shape in response to light could form the heart of novel light-activated devices.
