The increase in lifespan would be the equivalent of a human living for 400 or 500 years, according to one of the scientists. Doctors have used focused ultrasound to destroy tumors without invasive surgery for some time. However, the therapeutic ultrasound used in clinics today indiscriminately damages cancer and healthy cells alike. Scientists in the UK have shown for the first time that focused ultrasound from outside the body can improve the delivery of cancer drugs to tumors in humans. The discovery could help us better understand aging and eventually could lead to new treatments for cancer.
