Researchers at the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (WPI) and Tohoku University in Japan have recently identified an anomaly in the electromagnetic duality of Maxwell Theory.  Light is the fastest way to distinguish right-and left-handed chiral molecules, which has important applications in chemistry and biology.  Scientists at Tokyo Institute of Technology have fabricated a multiplexer/demultiplexer module based on a property of light that was not being exploited in communications systems: the optical vortex.  Optical chips are still some way behind electronic chips, but we're already seeing the results and this research could lead to a complete revolution in computer power.  Electronics could work faster if they could read and write data at terahertz frequency, rather than at a few gigahertz.  A team of researchers led by the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory has demonstrated a new method for splitting light beams into their frequency modes.  Quantum communication, which ensures absolute data security, is one of the most advanced branches of the "second quantum revolution".  Researchers at the University of Bristol's Quantum Engineering Technology Labs have demonstrated a new type of silicon chip that can help building and testing quantum computers and could find their way into your mobile phone to secure information.  Theoretical physicists propose to use negative interference to control heat flow in quantum devices.  Particle physicists are studying ways to harness the power of the quantum realm to further their research.
