Although smartphones and other consumer cameras are increasingly used for scientific applications, it's difficult to compare and combine data from different devices.  Advanced nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques at the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory have revealed surprising details about the structure of a key group of materials in nanotechology, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), and the placement of their active chemical sites.  With international collaboration, researchers at Aalto University have now developed a nanosized amplifier to help light signals propagate through microchips.  Physicists at the Kastler Brossel Laboratory in Paris have reached a milestone in the combination of cold atoms and nanophotonics.
