Researchers in Spain have developed azobenzene “photoswitches” that are able to efficiently and selectively activate neurons in brain tissue and in living nematodes, an animal model for the study of neuronal circuits.  Researchers at the University of Twente have designed a tiny needle in which micro-channels can be used for extracting small liquid samples from a local area of the brain.  The ability to grow large protein crystals is the single biggest bottleneck that limits the use of neutron protein crystallography in structural biology.
