An efficient new method to find out whether a material hosts topological states or not could help increase the number of known topological materials from a few hundred to thousands. With their insensitivity to decoherence, Majorana particles could become stable building blocks of quantum computers. A team of researchers at the University of Maryland has found a new way to route photons at the micrometer scale without scattering by building a topological quantum optics interface.
