Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory have discovered the relaxation dynamics of a zero-field state in skyrmions, a spinning magnetic phenomenon that has potential applications in data storage and spintronic devices.  Skyrmions are formed in magnetic systems via a variety of mechanisms, some of which work together.  Unique physical properties of these "magic knots" might help to satisfy demand for IT power and storage using a fraction of the energy.
