Life and death can be seen as the state in which we find ourselves, we can be alive or dead. We don't know why we are alive and we don't know what happens when we die, but we know that we can only be conscious of being alive. We think that our consciousness is created by our brain, but a quantum process tells us that our consciousness belongs to our atoms. And what happens to our atoms when we die, they don't die. So if our consciousness belongs to our atoms, then we are also conscious of ourselves when we are dead.
