This paper presents the practice of Social Work in mediating family disputes, the major causes of this conflicts, from the cases treated in a Civil Police unit (Sectional neighborhood of Sacramenta) in Belém, PA. Governed by the Policy for Public Safety of the State, the social worker acts in a preventive manner, avoiding that conflict situations reach the world of crime. The study was conducted through the following techniques: approach, observation, semi structured interviews, and documentary research that contributed with significant data for the study. The research showed that the social worker’s service of conflict mediation in that Sectional is promoting conflict resolution that could evolve into criminal practices, if there was not this type of intervention; in addition to promoting social harmony and harmonious balance between the parties, preventing violence and crime
